General Terms

  • Soccer (or Football or Fútbol): The sport where two teams compete to score goals by getting the ball into the opposing team’s net.
  • Goal: A point scored when the ball completely crosses the goal line between the goalposts and under the crossbar.
  • Field (or Pitch): The field where the game is played. Field size depends on age group.
  • Half: One of the two periods of a game, typically lasting 45 minutes each.

  • Offside: A violation where a player is closer to the opponent’s goal than both the ball and the second-last defender when the ball is played to them.
  • Foul: An illegal action such as tripping, pushing, or holding an opponent.
  • Free Kick: A kick awarded to the opposing team when a foul is committed. Free kicks can be either direct (can score) or indirect (must touch another player).
  • Penalty Kick: A direct shot on goal taken from the penalty spot after a foul in the penalty area.
  • Yellow Card: A caution given to a player for unsporting behavior or a serious foul.
  • Red Card: A card issued for serious foul play or misconduct, resulting in the player being sent off.
  • Handball: A violation in which a player deliberately handles the ball with their hands or arms.

Game Phases

  • Kick-off: The action that starts or restarts the game after a goal.
  • Halftime: The break between the first and second half of the game.
  • Extra Time: Additional time played if a match is tied after regulation time, typically 30 minutes.
  • Penalty Shootout: A method of determining the winner if a match is tied after extra time, where teams take turns kicking penalties.

Tactical Terms

  • Formation: The arrangement of players on the field, for example, 4-4-2 or 4-3-3.
  • Pressing: A defensive strategy where players work hard to regain possession by pressuring the opponent with the ball.
  • Counter-attack: A fast, often surprise attack launched immediately after regaining possession.

  • Assist: A pass or play that directly leads to a goal being scored.
  • Nutmeg: A technique where a player passes the ball through an opponent’s legs and regains possession on the other side.
  • Volley: A technique where the player strikes the ball before it touches the ground.
  • Bicycle Kick: An acrobatic kick where a player strikes the ball while in mid-air, with their legs above their head.
  • Chip: A soft shot, often over the goalkeeper, where the ball is lifted into the air with a delicate touch.

Terms Related to Youth/Developmental Soccer

  • Small-Sided Soccer: Games with fewer players on smaller fields (e.g., 3v3, 5v5), often used in youth leagues.
  • Recreational Soccer: A more relaxed version of soccer, typically for younger players or adults who play for fun rather than competition.
  • Youth Soccer: Soccer played by young athletes, with various age categories such as U6, U8, U10, U12, etc.
  • Developmental League: A league focused on player development rather than immediate competition, commonly seen in youth soccer.
